SIM-free and contract costs
Choose a comparison period first. For a SIM-free phone, add the handset, a suitable SIM plan for that period and necessary accessories. For a contract, add the upfront payment, each scheduled monthly charge and any required fees. If handset and airtime agreements have different lengths, show them separately.
Ofcom’s contract price-rise guidance, checked on 27 September 2026, explains that specified rises in new contracts must be set out in pounds and pence, with their timing, rather than linked to inflation or percentages. Older contracts signed before 17 January 2025 can differ. Include the actual scheduled changes in your calculation; multiplying the first monthly price by the term can miss them.
Check coverage and the data, roaming and usage allowances you need. A lower monthly charge is not useful if it requires a plan that does not meet those needs. Treat a trade-in value as conditional until the device and assessment requirements are clear.
Older phones and remaining support
An older flagship can be worth comparing, but check the remaining software support, condition and battery alongside the saving. Do not assume that a support period restarts on purchase.
Google’s Pixel update policy, checked on 27 September 2026, gives Pixel 8 and later models seven years of operating-system and security updates from first availability on the US Google Store. The policy has different terms for earlier models. Check the exact model’s date rather than applying seven years from the day you buy it.
Use the relevant manufacturer’s support information for an iPhone, Samsung or another brand. For refurbished stock, check the seller’s battery assessment, grade, guarantee and return route; “refurbished” alone does not supply those details.
Compare the complete offer before waiting
