Black Friday is the UK’s biggest pre-Christmas shopping event. It runs the week before December starts, anchored on the last Friday of November and extended on either side by retailer promotions. What is Black Friday?

Black Friday started as a US retail event on the day after Thanksgiving. It became established as a real UK shopping event around the mid-2010s, mostly driven by Amazon and the major electricals retailers. Today it sits next to Boxing Day as one of the two big sale windows on the UK retail calendar.

The mechanism behind the discounts is different from Boxing Day. Black Friday is a marketing-led event ahead of peak Christmas demand — retailers want to capture gift purchases at scale, so they put their headline deals up front to pull traffic in. Boxing Day is a clearance event after Christmas demand has passed. Both produce real discounts, but the categories that benefit are different.

When is Black Friday in the UK?

Black Friday falls on the last Friday of November. In 2026 that is 27 November. Cyber Monday — the digital and electronics extension of the event — falls on 30 November.

The actual sale window is longer than a single day. Most large UK retailers run a “Black Friday week” from the Monday before through to Cyber Monday. Amazon typically opens its Black Friday window earlier in the month, often by the second or third week of November, and a handful of brands run “Black November” promotions through the whole month.

What to buy on Black Friday

A few categories consistently discount harder on Black Friday than on Boxing Day. These are the ones to plan around.

Laptops — The clearest Black Friday category. Current-generation MacBooks, Windows ultraportables and gaming laptops all see their deepest discounts of the year in November. By Boxing Day, the best laptop deals are largely gone.

Mobile phones — Headline handset promos and network contract bundles peak around Black Friday. Previous-generation flagship iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Pixel devices often hit their year-low pricing here. Boxing Day still has phone deals, but the depth is shallower.

Gaming — Console hardware is the clearest case. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo work with retailers to set up Black Friday bundles that include games at no extra cost. For console buyers, Black Friday is the moment, not Boxing Day.

Headphones — Roughly even between the two events. Sony WH-1000XM and Bose QuietComfort models hit similar prices at Black Friday and Boxing Day. AirPods tend to be slightly cheaper at Black Friday when Apple-aligned retailers run their promotional calendar.

Major appliances — Washing machines, fridge-freezers and dishwashers see strong Black Friday discounts at Currys, AO and John Lewis. Stock depth is wider in November than in the post-Christmas clearance window.

TVs — Partly Black Friday, partly Boxing Day. For mid-range LED and QLED TVs in the 43”–55” range, Black Friday is competitive and stock depth is better. For the largest OLEDs (65”–77”), Boxing Day usually wins because of the January CES model-refresh dynamic.

How to check whether a Black Friday deal is worth it

The “was/now” pricing problem is bigger at Black Friday than at Boxing Day, because some retailers raise reference prices in October or early November so the headline saving looks larger. A few quick checks make the difference.

  • Use a price-tracking tool. For Amazon items, a price-history tool shows whether the listed “was” price was ever actually paid. For other retailers, search the model number on a price-comparison site to see the real 90-day range.
  • Compare two retailers on the same SKU. A 30% Black Friday saving at one retailer isn’t great if another retailer has the same model 10% cheaper without the headline branding.
  • Check the warranty and delivery terms. A discounted appliance isn’t great if the warranty has been cut from two years to one, or if delivery slips past Christmas.
  • Ask whether Boxing Day is likely to be lower. For fashion, beauty, toys and homeware, the answer is often yes. For laptops, current smartphones and console hardware, the answer is almost always no.

Offers change, stock moves, and prices vary by retailer and by minute. Treat any specific figure as a starting point — confirm the final price on the retailer’s site before committing.

  2. Build a shortlist of two or three specific products, by model number where possible.
  3. Check the 90-day price history before trusting any “was” price.
  4. Compare two retailers on the same SKU — the cheaper headline isn’t always the cheaper total.
  5. Confirm the delivery window, the returns policy and the warranty.
  6. For categories where Boxing Day usually wins — fashion, beauty, toys, homeware, large OLED TVs — consider whether the patience play makes more sense than buying now.
